The Beacon is a non-profit organization that serves individuals experiencing homelessness by providing daily services, civil legal aid, counseling and mentoring and housing case management. Our mission is to provide essential and next-step services to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston.

SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) is a model that helps individuals experiencing or at-risk for homelessness who have mental illness and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder or other medical impairments apply for Social Security disability benefits. The SOAR Disability Specialist will evaluate clients for prospective SSI and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits using the practices common to the SOAR program nationally.

Job Classification:

Full-time/40 hours weekly/Non-exempt

Reports to:

Public Benefits Manager


Meet with prospective clients to evaluate them for disability

Interact with partner agencies within medical legal partnership to coordinate referrals and facilitate SOAR process

Maintain caseload of evaluations and initial applications and data entry within different case management systems

Obtain, critically review, and summarize medical records and other evidence of disability

File initial SOAR applications and when authorized by supervisor, represent clients on appeal

Communicate with SSA and DDS regarding ongoing claims

Other duties as assigned by supervisor


Bachelor's Degree in a related field or above (per SSA representation guidelines).

Passion and experience in public interest/nonprofit sector and knowledge of trauma-informed care and/or background in healthcare a plus.

Must have excellent computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Apps and ability to utilize a digitized case management system.

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as organization skills.

Must be able to analyze information and data and create accurate and timely documentation for client records.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team, in a fast-paced, non-traditional environment while maintaining professional boundaries.

Spanish speaking is a plus but not required.

Familiarity with local nonprofits engaged in services to the homeless populations is helpful.

Physical Demands:

This position requires that the individual be able to lift up to 20 pounds, be seated for extended periods for computer work, and be comfortable working in various environments such as outdoors and/or in non-traditional settings on occasion.
