Job Description

Classification: Regular Full-Time

One opening is available for a Network Engineer II in the secured office area within the Security Operations Center (SOC). This Technical Assistance Center (TAC) position provides customer support and trouble resolution, to include test and turn up of new circuits, for a specific government contract. The successful candidate will hold, or be able to obtain, the required Top Secret clearances. Selected candidate must successfully complete required certifications of CompTIA: Security + or CISSP and the Nokia/Alcatel Lucent (ALU) Network Routing Specialist (NRS) I within the designated timeframe .

The customer network includes two types of data services, Ethernet VLANs and Layer 3 VPNs. The Engineer II position is responsible for providing high level help and technical support to CenturyLink customers, which may include troubleshooting support at the application layer. This position interfaces with internal CenturyLink departments, outside vendors, carriers and end user customers. This position has direct impact on the resolution of complex network trouble situations.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of technical customer call center experience.
  • Clearance Requirement: S/TS security investigations must be less than 5 years old
  • Associate degree in Engineering, Electronics, Networks or related technical or vocational education or equivalent experience or 3+ years of related work experience.
  • Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, and Juniper certifications are a plus.


  • Detailed understanding of the OSI networking model physical, data link, and network layers
  • Ability to support Back End application protocol troubleshooting provided both internally among directly-connected customer sites and externally to government, research, and academic networks both at private and public locations
  • Troubleshooting circuit degradation issues including utilization and latency problems, layer 2 issues, problem and fault isolation
  • A high degree of knowledge with IP routing
  • Knowledge about data transfer rates or limitations, Quality of Service (QoS) controls, TCP/IP, UDP, IPv4 and IPv6
  • A high level knowledge of PRN networks and routing protocols: BGP, VPLS, OSPF, MPLS, and ISIS
  • Manage and correlate multiple trouble reports. Communicate with customers and others in a repair situation
  • Experience with Network Management Services (NMS) and reporting, configuration management, and customer support management
  • Understand how to measure network performance aspects such as latency, jitter, and packet loss
  • Assist with occasional security incident research and reporting: malicious network activity mitigation, IP Spoofing prevention measures, DDOS and NetFlow monitoring.
  • Comprehensive monitoring and alarming of infrastructure components.

  • Ability to work all shifts in a 7x24x365 call center
  • Apply excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with trouble ticketing applications as well as other internal tools
  • Ability to pass both technical and security related tests
  • The ability to work off hours/on call and during holidays
  • Experience mentoring/training/coaching/collaborating with other employees
  • Respond to issues/inquiries within tight contract service level agreements (SLAs)
  • Create, prioritize, and solve trouble tickets which summarize the customer reported trouble
  • Initiate internal escalations on customer's behalf and provide follow up.
  • Outage reporting and handling
  • Rescheduling of normal or routine maintenance categories, updates to maintenance notifications, and customer maintenance notification
  • Effectively manages customer expectations (status and clear description of activities).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks on time, including ticket administration, communications, and follow up activities
  • Ability to learn in an ‘on-the-job' training environment
