Job Summary

As part of the BioRepository Resource Center (BioRC) and working closely with the Enterprise Informatics Group in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) and the Research Information Services group at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute, the Research Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) Developer II will be involved in supporting the CHOP Biobanking Strategic Initiative, which is aimed at centralizing CHOP's biobanking efforts and improving the breadth and access to biobank information resources.

The LIMS Developer II will work to support the BioRC, DBHi, and other centers and individual laboratories conducting biobanking projects. The LIMS Developer II will design, code, test, and support customized software extensions for Thermo Nautilus LIMS based on BioRC, DBHi, and Research Institute needs. The LIMS Developer II will also be responsible for helping to develop, customize implement, and support plugins, APIs, and instrument integration. The LIMS Developer II will partner to help design, implement, and support complex Nautilus workflows, templates (for specimens, tests, and results), and reports based on project and Research Institute needs. The LIMS Developer II will also design and perform data import, export, updates, and quality control procedures in support of LIMS biospecimen data. The LIMS Developer II will help analyze clinical research and laboratory workflows in order to deliver data management, data integration, and reporting solutions that improve the quality, consistency, and utility of biospecimen data throughout its lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborates in coordination with the BioRC and DBHi in the planning, design, development, and deployment of new LIMS applications, extensions, APIs, and enhancements to the existing LIMS system as well as monitors existing functionality.
  • Acquires biomedical domain knowledge in order to understand requirements for applications and data integration to meet BioRC needs.
  • Independently modifies existing or creates new code to meet user, system, or application requirements.
  • The LIMS Developer II will assist in the acquisition of BioRC/client requirements, design of solution sets, coding, testing and implementation.
  • Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new processes.
  • Develops written specifications representing logical and physical design.
  • Develops written documentation supporting system enhancements and/or selection.
  • Helps establish standards for coding and documentation.
  • Develops, standardizes, and maintains new or improved processes based on findings and analysis.
  • Partners with Data Integration Analysts in optimizing data management, transfer, integration, and procedures as they apply to LIMS.
  • Provides assistance managing data interfaces with external collaborators.
  • Analyzes complex problems related to one system or interface and provides technical recommendations.
  • Ability to clearly articulate problems, issues, and potential solutions to team members, clients, and organizational administration.
  • In coordination with the LIMS Administrator responds to user inquiries concerning systems operations and helps troubleshoot system and operator problems; investigates and resolves system issues, assists in correcting user errors.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Informatics, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline

Required Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of software development/programming experience.
  • Experience programming in .NET: C#.NET, VB.NET, ASP.NET.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Javascript and Python programming languages.
  • Experience developing configuring LIMS software and related tools.
  • Experience with Lab IT systems architecture and integration.
  • Experience (1-3 years) within a healthcare environment.

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Working knowledge of Oracle PL/SQL.
  • Comfortable working in a MS Windows environment.
  • Ability to work as an individual as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain own workflow and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrent initiatives.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Detail oriented and well organized.
